The bullshit dream of making money from blogging
The internet is filled with billions of people who refuse to pay
for anything. They want everything for free. So then what we
do is fill our sites with ads because its the only way we can
pay for the running costs. Then they complain about all the ads.
To make real money from ads you need to be pulling hundreds
of thousands of hits per month and need to be pretty clever with
ad placement. CPC models are horrible,CPM models are for high
traffic sites and affiliates take half of everything.
An ad on TV can make R60k for less than a minute of airtime
with an audience smaller than what your site has without showing
accurate statistics and conversion rates. You on the other hand
with a website that sees more hits than the average dstv channel in
a month have to be satisfied with putting up an ad that takes up half
your site for a month for less than half what tv is getting in
half a minute.
Building a site thinking you'll make money from ads makes
absolutely no sense to me. It's too much work for too little return
on investment. Try to think for a second the biggest adsense check
you've ever seen from a personal blogger, now consider how much
work he/she had to put into getting there.
Blogging is fucking painful if you're doing it for money, and it's a
dead-end. There are easier ways to make money online.
Start targeting customers that will pay, charge them a fee and
give them a good service. That's it. That's my new motto.
Screw this wild goose chase for traffic.
Yesterday I quoted David from 37Signals:
"Simple math to make you think: 2000 users paying $50 pm
for your app over 12 months will make you a millionaire."
This is the podcast that made me think about this:
Give it a listen.
